EPTRI wants to map the expertise and competences of the research units in Pan-European countries through an online questionnaire, to identify high-end apparatus (equipment, resources, research facilities, platforms, methodologies and experimental settings) which can be accessible through the new EPTRI Infrastructure for performing research in a paediatric context.

From April 2018, a total of 241 research units affiliated to 190 different Institutions answered to the surveys.

In detail, 151 Institutions (single research unit) declared to have interest in one of the 4 EPTRI specific fields, 30 Institutions declared to have research units interested in two fields, 6 in three fields and 3 in all the fields. Specifically, 82 units (33.8%) described their expertise in Human Development and Paediatric Medicines Discovery (pluripotent stem cell, 3D cell cultures, target validation, patient derived cell assays, micro-fluidics, high-throughput cell image analysis, etc), while 73 units (30.1%) declared to perform biomarkers identification/validation in paediatric diseases and 16 of them host biobanks exclusively dedicated to paediatric samples.

Moreover, 52 units (21.4%) declared to work on Developmental Pharmacology, providing services such as microdosing, analytical methods adapted to low sample volumes, physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK), pop-pharmacokinetic (pop-PK) and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodinamic (PK/PD), modelling pharmacokinetic, and facilities such as placental platform for drug evaluation. Also 35 units (14.4%) reported their expertise in the area of Paediatric Medicines Formulations and Medical Devices in pre-formulative paediatric science and 12 units (5%) declared to have expertise in paediatric medical devices.

The countries with the highest number of research units are Italy, UK and Spain followed by Germany and The Netherlands.

Here below there are the 4 links to the 4 online questionnaires, one for each field of drug discovery and development, corresponding to the 4 future thematic platforms of EPTRI:

Each questionnaire will take approximately 15 minutes.

Please, feel free to share the links with your colleagues throughout Europe that could be interested in.

Your contribution will be very important in the design of this innovative paediatric Infrastructure.
